Microdermabrasion

This is a noninvasive procedure that uses a crystal-tipped wand that exfoliates as it glides across the skin. This procedure removes the dry, dead skin cells to reveal a smooth, glowing, and healthier complexion. Skin care products are able to penetrate deeper, and your makeup glides on smoother.

Microdermabrasion has become a popular cosmetic treatment over the years. It is done by spraying microcrystals on the skin to remove the outermost layer of dry and dead skin. These microcrystals remove the dead layers and help minimize acne and scarring. It is a non-surgical and non-invasive treatment which doesn’t involve chemicals. Microdermabrasion promotes the growth of new skin cells with the higher levels of collagen and elastin.

However, it is essential to take care of few things before and after getting microdermabrasion. May be the treatment doesn’t for you. It is also possible that your negligence may “defeat the purpose”.

This is why you should be aware of what to do before and after microdermabrasion.

What to do before Microdermabrasion?

Discuss the Goals with the Practitioner:
What are your expectations? What are your goals? What are your concerns? You should discuss everything with the practitioner in a microdermabrasion consultation. You may be provided with the instructions to follow before and after the treatment.

Know If You are the Right Candidate for Microdermabrasion:
The treatment is beneficial for the people with ageing signs like facial lines, wrinkles, sun damage, age spots, pigmentation, clogged pores and minor scars. It may work for the patients with acne or rosacea.

But microdermabrasion is not right for deep scars, active keloids, undiagnosed lesions, herpes and warts. Pregnant woman should avoid microdermabrasion. You should wait for 3 weeks for microdermabrasion if you have got a recent chemical peel or other skin procedure like collagen injections. If you have deep scars, facial creases or other moderate to severe skin conditions, you should prefer stronger treatment like chemical peel, microdermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing.

Use Numbing Cream as Microdermabrasion May Hurt:
The treatment causes a slight warming sensation during the removal of damaged and dead skin layers. If you havelow pain threshold, you can use a numbing cream to reduce pain and discomfort occurring during the process.

Avoid using Retin-A or other exfoliating creams 3 days before the treatment.
Avoid sun tanning creams or sprays 3 days before your treatment.
Use non-oily, non-soap based cleanser to wash your face and neck.

What to after Microdermabrasion?

After getting microdermabrasion, skincare is downright essential as skin becomes sensitive and in healing stages.

Avoid Direct Sun Exposure:
Apply sunscreen after every 3 hours, espeically if you are going out in the sun. Wear a cap and shade for an extra layer of protection.

Avoid Heavy Workouts:
Skip your workout schedule for a few days. Besides, don’t swim in chlorinated pools for a couple of days after your treatment as chlorine present in the pool water can dry up your skin.

Avoid Touching Your Skin Frequently:Don’t touch your skin every now and then. This is because the germs from the hands can transfer to the healing skin. Make sure to wash the hands before applying any products to the skin. Avoid picking at scratching the skin.

Keep Your Skin Hydrated:
Drink a lot of water to keep your skin hydrated.

Cool your skin off:
You may feel like sun burn after the treatment. To feel better, wash or spray your face with cold water. Or you can try ice compress by wrapping ice cubes or frozen veggies in a cloth or towels. Avoid applying ice directly to the face.

Visit Your Physician in Case of Bleeding:
If your bleeding persists, see your physician immediately. See if your skin has small red bumps that tend to bleed or showing bleed under the surface of the skin.

Avoid Taking Painkillers:
Don’t take medicines like aspirin or Ibuprofen as it causes petechiae or purpura. It is better to contact your physician to get a right painkiller.

Monitor Your Healing Process:
Take a note of your skin healing. Do you see redness or swelling? Check at what extent these symptoms are advancing. Contact your doctor if they persist for more than three days. Similarly, check if the redness or swelling starts a few days after the treatment, when you are supposed to be completely recovered. Also visit your physician if you experience pain for over 3 days.
